How does the Hero10 Black Bones work without a battery? Sure, as a niche product it is a bit more expensive, but it still has a warranty unlike a Franken-GoPro that someone has taken a knife to. The Hero10 Black Bones is GoPro doing the weight saving for FPV pilots, and adding a heatsink and some venting to solve any overheating issues. According to Lema, this often leads to the camera overheating, especially on takeoff or landing. The DIY approach, however, is not without its downsides.

In an interview with The Verge, GoPro Head of Product, Pablo Lema, explains that many of these FPV pilots have already taken to chopping the bits they consider unnecessary off their GoPros in an attempt to lighten them so the drone can stay in the air longer. These drones normally have a low-latency camera connected to a VR headset so the pilot can fly, and a second camera (often a GoPro but sometimes a 35mm film camera!) to capture high-quality footage. The Hero10 Black Bones is designed exclusively for first-person view (FPV) drones-the kind of drone that’s often used to shoot footage like Tesla’s recent fly-through of its Gigafactory in Berlin or the video of a drone flying through a bowling alley that went viral last year. Okay, so there is a reason that GoPro is stripping out a load of headline features from its flagship action camera and then charging an extra 50 bucks to save 3.5 ounces. The GoPro Hero10 Black Bones, on the other hand, costs $499.99 (or $399.98 with that GoPro Subscription), doesn’t have a battery, has no screens, and isn’t waterproof, but weighs just 1.9 ounces.Ĭrucially, both come with the same great 1/2.3-inch sensor and GP2 processor, HyperSmooth 4.0 in-camera stabilization, and the ability to shoot 5.3K footage at 60 fps, 4K footage at 120 fps, and 2.7K footage at 240 fps. It has a rechargeable battery, front and rear screens, and is waterproof to 33 feet, but weighs 5.4 ounces. He is also a member of the Producers Guild of America. The GoPro Hero10 Black costs $499.99 (or $349.99 with a 1-year GoPro Subscription). The GoPro Hero10 Black Bones is no exception, and one day I hope I can build an FPV drone with my sons and stick a Black Bones on it! The Black Bones retails for $399.99 with the included one-year GoPro subscription (a must-have in my opinion - it even covers a no-questions-asked camera replacement) or for $499.99 without the subscription.

The ReelSteady update usually costs $99.99 as an upgrade to the standard GoPro player, but it is included with the purchase of the Hero10 Black Bones! Combining the GoPro’s HyperSmooth in-camera stabilization with the ReelSteady update will blow everyone’s mind. What really got my interest was the inclusion of ReelSteady in the newly updated GoPro Player. With the GoPro Hero10 Black Bones, FPV-capable drone operators will now have much higher color fidelity, resolution and frame rates and even stabilization tools. More and more, I have been seeing FPV footage providing almost a bird’s-eye view, but the quality is still a little lacking. That said, on a lot of television shows I work on, drones are an essential camera in their arsenal these days. I’m going to be honest here: I don’t know the first thing about flying an FPV drone, but I would learn.

To operate the Black Bones, you can use the two buttons on the camera, scan a QR code (with the GoPro camera) that will load preset settings (amazing!), use the GoPro Quik app, or even use your own flight controller using the command line interface of Betaflight. This helps with a more traditional and eye-pleasing look (some say cinematic). The lens cover is replaceable and compatible with third-party Hero9/10 Black ND filters to help lower the camera’s shutter speed without blowing out the highlights and crushing the shadows. This is an FPV-specific camera that cuts out a lot of the weight and dimension of the traditional Hero10 Black and gives power to the FPV drone user. Following its release of the all-in-one Hero 10 Black Creator Edition and the April 11 update to the GoPro Player - to include the huge and amazing ReelSteady footage stabilization addition - GoPro has released the Hero10 Black Bones. GoPro is going back to back with product releases.
